Common FAQs

Below are some commonly asked questions about aeroponics and our growing systems. If you would like to learn more, take a tour of our facility, or ask more questions please contact us.

Whats Aeroponic?

Aeroponics is plant-cultivation technique in which the roots hang suspended in the air while nutrient solution is delivered to them in the form of a fine mist..

What can you grow with an aeroponic system?

Just about anything you could grow in a regular garden! We’ve had great success with most herbs, leafy vegetables, and even strawberries. Small to medium sized flowers can also be grown. For best results, avoid root crops, bushes, and trees – the sizes and shapes of those plants don’t do well in the small plant spots of AERO systems.

How do the AERO units grow without soil?

All AERO grow systems use rockwool instead of soil for growing. Rockwool is a spun molten rock medium that promotes growth and nutrient absorption. The plant roots grow through the rockwool and hang down in the center of the columns.

Does the water run over the roots continuously?

The pump runs in a cyclic on-then-off pattern throughout the entire day, though the times may vary by environment and what is planted. We recommend a cycle of 15-minutes on and 15-minutes off. We include a timer in each AERO residential unit kit.

Do you need to add a fertilizer for the plants to grow effectively?

Yes, the plants need nutrient-rich water. When purchasing an AERO residential unit, we supply you with the nutrients needed for aeroponic growing. Additional nutrients can be purchased from our website. We also recommend using rain water for water that is pH balanced.

When should your AERO unit be cleaned?

We suggest cleaning out the water reservoir every 10 – 12 weeks or as you notice a buildup of plant roots or algea. If you keep the reservoir cap on and the water free from sunlight exposure, your tank should stay clean. The columns can be removed in the AERO Mobile and Wall Gardens and sprayed clean from root debris as you harvest your plants. This prevents build of or stray roots, plant matter, and algae that can ruin your pumps and filters. The outside of the units can be wiped down as needed to reduce algae. We recommend that you avoid using harsh, toxic chemical cleaners while there are plants in the units.

How long does it take for plants to grow?

There are a few factors involved in getting you plants to grow, namely sunlight, temperature, and nutrient-water. When all three are working in harmony, you can have plants at full bloom in 4 – 6 weeks. During the winter months (particularly in northern climates), plants can take 8 – 10 weeks to fully mature.

Can you grow plants in the winter?

If your AERO residential unit is indoors, then you can absolutely harvest all year, but you might need to use additional grow lights if you cannot provide an area with an average of 10 – 12 hours of sunlight. Even so, reduced temperatures will reduce growth and cause longer harvest cycles.

How to handle pests?

Any time you are growing plants, there are going to be pests. Although a greenhouse will limit the system’s exposure to bugs and other plant diseases, we do occasionally use organic sprays to rid our greenhouse of pests. If you don’t want to spray, you can also try companion planting. Pyrethium and chives are just a couple of the many plants that drive away bugs. For the AERO residential units, we recommend spraying your plants with soapy water for larva and other small pests. If you prefer to use an organic spray, try something like Pure Spray Green. Plants may be sprayed or the top of the plant can be dipped in the solution.
